About The Rich Roll Podcast

The Rich Roll Podcast is hosted by Rich Roll, a former Stanford swimmer and ultra-endurance athlete who frames much of the show around his own sobriety and, more recently, his recovery from spinal fusion surgery. The format rotates between three recurring modes: long-form one-on-one interviews, solo episodes where Roll addresses a topic directly, and panel-style 'Roll On'/AMA episodes co-hosted with journalist Adam Skolnick that answer listener questions and react to current events. Interview guests skew toward endurance athletes and ultrarunners, several of whom discuss recovery from opioid, heroin, or alcohol addiction alongside their racing careers. Other episodes bring on nutrition scientists and researchers, such as Simon Hill, to work through subjects like U.S. dietary guidelines, protein intake, and plant-based versus animal-based diets. Solo and panel episodes often use a public figure's personal crisis, such as Tiger Woods' DUI arrest or online 'looksmaxxing' culture, as an entry point into broader discussion of addiction, self-worth, and mental health. Concepts from addiction medicine, including Gabor Mate's 'hungry ghost' framing, recur across episodes as an interpretive lens on guest and public-figure behavior. The show also runs conventional host-read sponsor reads for wellness, food, and consumer brands within episodes. Listeners tend to be drawn to endurance sports, sobriety and recovery communities, nutrition science, or long-form conversational interviews about personal transformation. Episodes run roughly 40 to 100 minutes and are conversational rather than tightly scripted, with the host's own recovery narrative serving as a recurring reference point across nearly every episode type.

Made for: Listeners interested in addiction recovery, ultra-endurance sports, nutrition science, and long-form personal-transformation interviews.

What sets it apart: Pairs long-form athlete and scientist interviews with a recurring co-hosted news-commentary segment, both filtered through the host's own addiction-recovery and endurance-athlete background.

The King of Moab: Ultrarunner Max Jolliffe On Winning Moab 240, Recovery From Heroin Addiction & Why Suffering Is His Greatest TeacherApr 6, 2026

A grounded Rich Roll conversation on Moab, recovery, storytelling, and the daily discipline behind endurance.

Max Jolliffe comes to The Rich Roll Podcast with the headline story already in place: winning Moab 240 after recovery from heroin addiction, and treating suffering as one of his teachers. The episode, though, spends time on the less mythic parts of how that person gets built.

Rich Speaks On Tiger Woods, Addiction & The Wounds That Fame Can't HealApr 2, 2026

A careful solo reflection on Tiger Woods, addiction, and the wounds high achievement cannot fix.

Rich Roll uses Tiger Woods' arrest as a way into addiction, impairment, accountability, and the pain that can sit underneath extreme achievement. He is careful not to turn the episode into a pile-on.

Decoding Looksmaxxing: The Crisis Consuming Young Men & The Real Path To Self-WorthFeb 26, 2026

A thoughtful look at looksmaxxing, male self-worth, and how body obsession can slide into isolation.

Looksmaxxing is treated here as more than a grooming trend. Rich Roll and his guest use it to talk about young men caught in self-surveillance, status anxiety, and a fragile sense of worth tied to how the body is judged.

AMA: Alex Pretti, Alex Honnold, Peter Attia, & Finding Hope In Dark TimesFeb 12, 2026

A loose, candid health reset about simple eating, careful training, and rebuilding vitality without rushing recovery.

Roll On comes back in a casual, self-checking mode, with Rich Roll using his own routine as the main health thread. After time spent writing and feeling disconnected from his body, he talks through a stripped-down reset: indoor bike trainer sessions, light functional fitness, a…
