Daily daf, carefully worked through.

The gist

Talking Talmud follows the daily daf with close readings of Mishnah and Gemara. Its conversations move through ritual detail, legal argument, historical setting, and theological pressure with a steady explanatory hand.

About Talking Talmud

Talking Talmud is a daily study companion for people following the daf, and for curious listeners who want a serious taste of how Talmudic reasoning unfolds. It is not a quick takeaway show. The pleasure is in the slow work. Episodes tend to enter a Mishnah or Gemara passage directly, then circle back to define the terms, clarify the case, and explain why the distinction matters. Recent selections from Menahot focus on Temple offerings in striking detail: grain offerings, shewbread, cubits, altar ledges, priestly portions, smicha, waving, kneading, baking, grinding, and sifting. That could become dry cataloging, but the show keeps asking practical questions. What can be done before Shabbat? What cannot wait? Who has to place hands on an animal offering, and can anyone do it on someone else's behalf? What happens to the shewbread when the Mishkan is packed for travel? The conversation repeatedly notices how foreign these practices can feel from the standpoint of contemporary worship, then keeps going instead of flattening the discomfort. Legal categories become a way to think about obligation, equality, timing, inheritance, and communal responsibility. Historical passages get similar care. A discussion of Rabbi Yeshua ben Hanina and Roman officials, for example, reads the stories not only as clever exchanges but as Jewish reassurance under Roman domination after catastrophe. The show's rhythm is conversational and cumulative. One voice often lays out the sugya, while the other prompts, agrees, reframes, or gently complicates the point. Hebrew and Aramaic vocabulary remains present, but the explanations keep the listener oriented. Talking Talmud stands out because it lets the daf stay dense while making the act of following it feel possible. It respects the text, the listener, and the unresolved strangeness of the material.

Made for: For daf-yomi learners, Jewish text students, and intellectually curious listeners who want Talmud explained with patience rather than speed. It especially suits people comfortable with Hebrew terms and close legal reasoning.

What sets it apart: The show makes technical Temple law and rabbinic argument feel like live study, not detached summary. Its strength is the steady movement between exact textual detail and plain-language reflection on why the sugya matters.

Hullin 60: God's Lion's Roar to Defend the Jewish PeopleJun 29, 2026

A steady Talmud reading that turns Roman confrontation into a lesson about endurance.

This episode follows rabbinic stories about Rabbi Yeshua ben Hanina and a Roman official to ask a larger, harder question: how do Jews keep speaking about God after catastrophe?

Menahot 73: Idolators' Temple Offerings (Yes, Really)Mar 25, 2026

A careful walk through grain offerings, equality, and a strikingly open Temple world.

Menachot 73 moves with steady care through the procedure of grain offerings, and Talking Talmud gives that material room to breathe. Anne Gordon and Yerdeinah Azband stay close to chapter 7 and Leviticus 2 as they explain how the handful is removed, what remains for the Kohanim,…

Menahot 89: On Lighting the Menorah and Libations

A careful look at the oil, grain, wine, and labor behind Temple offerings.

Talking Talmud treats Menachot 89 as a close look at the Temple's operating demands, from oil for the menorah to grain offerings, wine libations, and the ratios that decide what may be combined.

Zevahim 116: To Keep the Seed Alive

A close Talmudic look at sacrifice, Noah's ark, and non-Jews bringing offerings once private altars were barred to Jews.

Zevahim 116 traces the Gemara's inquiry into what could be offered before the Mishkan, beginning with the difference between blemished and unblemished animals and then pressing into the more difficult case of an animal missing a whole limb.
