INSIDE THE DEBATE with John Donvan, Nayeema Raza, and Nick Gillespie

December 5, 2025·34 min·2 clips
John Donvan explains why he shut down a debater who accused their opponent of making a racist argument.
John Donvan begins with a reset. The conversation is a live Substack kickoff, a way to show paid subscribers the kind of behind-the-scenes exchange the platform will host. It also has an odd little occasion built in. Donvan says he thinks this is the first time the three Open to Debate moderators have appeared together on one screen, which gives the whole thing a relaxed, self-aware feel. The topic is moderation itself. They talk about how debate works when the moderator cannot take a side but still has to enforce the rules. Donvan names the hard part directly. He describes stepping in after a speaker's detailed argument was met with a response about the person or the atmosphere, not the point. He calls it a yellow card. The standard here is not neutrality as sitting back. It is protecting the shape of the debate. Personal attacks are out of bounds. Donvan says he has made that call against both left and right, because the issue is method, not substance. He does not pretend it feels easy. The call is awkward, uncomfortable, and never enjoyable, but he says it is necessary if the conversation is going to stay on the road. Naima answers carefully. She separates the interviewer or dinner-party role from Donvan's Open to Debate role, where taking a position is barred but enforcing decorum still matters. She also adds a personal note, thanking him for naming the difficulty and suggesting that, for obvious visual reasons, the same intervention may land differently depending on who makes it. The close turns back to community. Donvan thanks Nick and Naima, apologizes for missing some questions, and points listeners toward paid subscription, future conversations, and continued comment.

Inside the Debate uses Open to Debate's Substack launch as an excuse for a useful bit of shop talk. John Donvan, Nayeema Raza, and Nick Gillespie frame the move as a way to keep a closer line open with listeners, then get into the less visible work of moderation: what counts as…
