Revisiting “Future on Ice”

August 21, 2025·48 min·3 clips
PJ walked out of San Quentin in new Timberland boots and was immediately shackled head to toe by ICE officers.
The road hum is there from the jump. Bruce and the managing producer are somewhere between Oklahoma City and Dallas, still carrying the heat and afterglow from performing inside two women's prisons. The day feels loose at first. Logistics, water, gratitude. That easy chatter makes the return to the old story hit harder. Poon comes in first as a contrast. Inside prison's racial sorting system, he finds a box that can hold him: Asian Pacific Islanders, with Cambodians included. Jazzy does not get a box that fits. He is Swedish by origin and Black by identification, and at Solano State Prison that is not just personal. It changes what can happen to his family. His girlfriend is already flying from Sweden when a fight between a Black man and a white man sets off lockdowns for both groups. Jazzy cannot reach her. The policy becomes painfully ordinary: a plane in the air, a visit lost, someone waiting with no answer. His son is part of it too. Jazzy starts weighing identity against the risk that another visit could disappear before it starts. The hosts stay with that unease. They say California state prisons no longer allow race based lockdowns, but they do not sand down the memory. The episode leaves the classification feeling strange and blunt, especially once family gets pulled into it. By the end, the road opens the conversation again, this time toward how much of the world knows America, and how little America may know back.

As heard by us

Race-based prison housing in California, and the afternoon Jazzy's girlfriend landed from Sweden into a visit that could not happen.

The episode catches Shabnam, the show's managing producer, in a car between Oklahoma City and Dallas, talking to a host just out of performing inside two Oklahoma women's prisons in 100-degree heat. They revisit an earlier piece on racial classification in California prisons.
