The five physical attributes scouts grade on a 20-80 scale: hit, power, run, arm, and field. A player can have elite tools and fail to develop them — tools are potential, not production.
Estimated time of arrival — when a prospect is projected to reach the majors. Highly uncertain, especially for high-school draftees who may be two to four years away.
An annual mechanism allowing teams to claim players left unprotected on another organization's 40-man roster. Claimed players must stay on the big-league roster or be offered back.
