The beat, written
What is actually on this beat
The most useful Formula 1 listening splits between explainers that take you inside the machinery of a race weekend and fan-led shows that argue through what just happened. Coverage beyond those lanes is thin. Plenty of podcasts mention the sport; far fewer give it sustained attention.
Start with the working parts of a race weekend
F1 Nation offers the clearest way in by unpacking a subject rather than assuming listeners already understand it. F1 Explains: The Formula 1 Paddock begins with the environment around the racing, while F1 Explains: race strategy in 2026 - with Bernie Collins and F1 Explains: Commentating on a Grand Prix - with Alex Jacques narrow the focus to decisions and presentation.
The show also steps back from pure explanation when the season itself becomes the story. Rivals and stars of the season so far – with Jolyon Palmer + James Hinchcliffe promises a broader conversation about the people shaping it. That mix makes F1 Nation the strongest general-purpose starting point here: specific enough to teach, but not confined to one race recap.
When the debrief becomes an argument
Beyond The Racing Line - Formula 1 Podcast sounds less like a briefing and more like racing-literate regulars working through a weekend together. The panel is quick, argumentative and comfortable correcting itself. Mushroom Mayhem - The Japanese GP Review and Batteries Not Included - The Australian GP Review are the on-ramps: event-led episodes where concrete incidents can turn into rankings, pushback and side debates.
Shift+F1: A Formula 1 Podcast has a similarly informed-friends rhythm, though its humour is drier and its digressions more deliberate. It assumes the listener can follow the shorthand, then moves between jokes, technical observations and commentary on the spectacle surrounding the sport. Abu Dhabi GP is the available place to hear that approach attached to a race weekend.
The occasional one-race stop
Some coverage is much narrower. Rogue Two Media - The Big Feed offers Monaco Formula 1 GP 2021, a clearly labelled event episode rather than evidence of an extensive Formula 1 run. It is useful if Monaco is the attraction, but it does not offer the same continuing route through the sport as the dedicated shows.
WQSU-FM The Pulse - Original Programming also has a small “Yellow Flags” thread. Yellow Flags - Superclipping, Believe81 and will Max retire? S2 EP3 suggests a looser, question-driven discussion, while Yellow Flags S2 EP2 gives little indication of its specific focus. Treat these as side routes, not the first stop for a listener building a regular Formula 1 queue.
Where to start
For orientation, choose F1 Explains: The Formula 1 Paddock. For strategy, move to F1 Explains: race strategy in 2026 - with Bernie Collins. If you already know the vocabulary and want a livelier post-race room, try Mushroom Mayhem - The Japanese GP Review. For a single event-focused detour, use Monaco Formula 1 GP 2021.
