Queer Talmud study with comic legal teeth.

The gist

Xai, how are you? follows two regular voices through Mishnah Nazir with equal parts textual patience and conversational chaos. Nazirite vows, impurity, Shammai and Hillel, and Queen Helene share space with gardening, skating, sickness, wedding planning, and small domestic disasters.

About Xai, how are you?

Xai, how are you? is a queer Jewish study show where Mishnah Nazir becomes both the object of careful reading and the pretext for a long-running conversation. The episodes are anchored in rabbinic law. They follow Nazirite vows, shaving schedules, impurity, graveyards, Eretz Israel, Shammai, Hillel, and the problem of what counts when time gets interrupted. The handling is precise, but never airless. A discussion of whether days are lost or bridged can sit beside a fake-spring complaint, a roller-skating update, a birthday dinner, or a dog joining the recording from the couch. The show’s rhythm often starts with ordinary life and then slides, sometimes abruptly, into Mishnah. That contrast is part of its texture. The speakers care about the text enough to push on it when it seems too neat, too random, or structurally dubious. They also know when to laugh at a legal scenario that appears to have wandered in from nowhere. Queen Helene, Nazirite ship, graveyard impurity, and the rabbinic treatment of land and air all become occasions for argument rather than museum pieces. The conversation can be blunt and irreverent, but the irreverence usually sharpens the study rather than replacing it. There is an appealing willingness to admit confusion in public. A passage may be called clean and understandable, then immediately questioned for why it exists at all. The show returns often to the pleasures of taking apart small textual mechanisms: a phrase, a timeline, a court scenario, a final line that does not feel like a finale. It also carries a contemporary Jewish political thread through references to religious anti-Zionism and related teaching. Those moments remain grounded in the episodes’ lived intellectual world. For listeners who already like Talmud, the appeal is the lively friction between rigor and comedy. For listeners newer to the material, the appeal is the way the speakers make legal oddity feel socially legible. Xai, how are you? treats study as something conversational, recursive, and a little unruly. It is a show about Mishnah, but also about the strange models people use to make sense of themselves, their laws, and each other.

Made for: For listeners drawn to Jewish text study that is intimate, funny, and comfortable with ambiguity. It especially suits people interested in Mishnah, queer Jewish conversation, rabbinic oddity, and contemporary religious politics.

What sets it apart: The show pairs granular Mishnah Nazir analysis with the casual texture of an ongoing friendship. Its strength is the constant swivel between legal minutiae and lived life without sanding down either side.

In their own words

Queer Jews Michael Sokolovsky and Rabbi Xava De Cordova play with the multi-millennial dialectic that is the Talmud. Join them as they throw drash, seek prophetic insight and uncover the rabbinic smuttiness inherent in the system.
