ScotRock is a Scottish climbing podcast made from the inside. Its hosts, Robert McKenzie and Cal McBain, work for Climb Scotland, and the conversation takes comfort with walls, gear, comps and access work for granted. Nothing gets over-explained. The show sounds like a chat that happened to be recorded: jokes up front, laughter and corrections left in, and stories allowed to wander through names and places before they land. Most of the substance comes from guests. The two episodes with Kevin Howett, 'Episode 39: Kevin Howett - Climb Now, works Done (35 years of Mountaineering Scotland)' and 'Episode 40: Kevin Howett - The Northumbrian Halfwit (35 years of Mountaineering Scotland) - Part 2', show how patient it can be. He recalls more than a year of meetings spent explaining access and the Scottish idea of freedom to roam. He then moves on to facility development and a coaching proposal he kept pushing while the wider meetings went round in circles. The hosts present all of this as recognition that is long overdue. Part 2 ends with a send-off into his retirement and a pointer back to an earlier episode about his own climbing. The Controversial Panel Show is the noisier counterweight. Rebekah Drummond and Robbie Phillips join the hosts, everyone brings a controversial topic, and disagreement is the point. One episode opens on idle gossip about climbing sponsorship. The substance can be serious, though: one exchange weighs climbing against conservation, citing the rare sticky catchfly at Weem and seasonal restrictions for nesting birds, and keeps coming back to how difficult the compromise is. Competition climbing gets its own treatment. One episode follows six next-generation Scottish athletes before and after a competition at the Edinburgh International Climbing Arena, catching the pre-start nerves, the teasing, and their stated aim of simply putting on a show for a home crowd. Another was streamed live on Facebook with Molly Hughes, Hamish Frost and Iona Rendal, and it drifts toward group walks, learning from more experienced people, and the pull of summit fever. One point stands out: you do not have to reach a summit to learn something. The humour stays dry and affectionate, and it is happy to undercut an impressive story. Each of these episodes closes on the same small ritual, a reminder to do buddy checks before climbing.
