Weekly parshah and moadim, taught as a live shiur.

The gist

Rabbi Aryeh Shulman teaches the weekly parshah and the upcoming holidays the way a shiur actually sounds: a question raised, then chased down. Recent episodes run through the Haggadah in sequence, counting the Dayenus, decoding the acronyms of the makos, and preparing for Pesach.

About Parshah and the Moadim with Rabbi Aryeh Shulman

Parshah and the Moadim with Rabbi Aryeh Shulman is a long-running Torah lecture series organized by the Jewish year. Rabbi Aryeh Shulman is Rosh Kollel of Kollel Ateres Ami. The recordings sound like what they are — a shiur, delivered live, with the reasoning left in. The recent catalog leans heavily into the Haggadah, taught as a numbered sequence across many parts. One session works through the Kama Maalos Tovos and the fifteen Dayenus, opening with an apology for having miscounted last time. That correction is not edited out. It becomes the way into a cleaner reading, in which the first several Dayenus turn out to describe five distinct things done for the Jewish people on the way out of Egypt. The first of those is separation. The sages' image of the nation as a fetus inside its mother, a limb rather than a person, gets turned over several times until the point about disassociation lands. Another episode takes up Rabbi Huda's famous acronym for the makos and asks the blunt question: where is the wisdom in it? Any mnemonic would be memorable. The answer runs through the Midrash and the engraved acronyms, arriving at three separate groupings of plagues and at least one principle — the level of warning given — for why they group that way. A Pesach shiur on maror reads the Torah's description of embittered lives, harsh labor, mortar and bricks, as a portrait of study itself: the raising of a difficulty, the construction of an argument, the sorting out of halacha. Another turns to Chodesh Nisan and the work of clearing chometz from a home and from a life, noting that the preparation for the redemption began at the start of the month rather than later on. The register is analytical but unhurried in its thinking and quick in its speech. Sentences braid, double back, and restate a term in several forms until it is pinned down. Listener check-ins keep the thread visible. Digressions arrive for a reason — an analogy, a definition, a wider frame — and then the main line resumes. Hebrew, Aramaic and yeshivish vocabulary is constant, and much of it is glossed in passing, though a listener with some background will move faster. There is no co-host and no interview format. The audience is present in the room, occasionally audible, but the argument belongs to one voice. With more than 400 episodes, the archive functions as a rolling companion to the calendar: parshah during the year, festival material as each moed approaches, and extended series like the Haggadah when the season calls for it.

Made for: Listeners with some yeshiva or day-school background who want substantive weekly parshah and festival learning rather than a short inspirational thought. Especially suited to anyone preparing for Pesach or studying the Haggadah in depth.

What sets it apart: The thinking is left audible — a difficulty is named, a prior miscount is corrected out loud, and the answer is built in real time rather than presented finished. Rather than a standalone weekly thought, the Haggadah material runs as a numbered series that accumulates across sessions.
