Learn Slovak and More Podcast belongs to Božena, who introduces herself in every cold open as a native of Slovakia, a Slovak language teacher, and an unshakable optimist. The greeting is bilingual from the first line, and the season and episode number typically get read out in Slovak as well as English before anything else happens. That habit says a lot about the kind of teacher she is. In the lesson segments, nothing in Slovak goes untranslated. A regular episode runs on two tracks. The first is a talk, in English, about some corner of Slovak culture or history. It has meant the first radio broadcast in Slovakia, the free radio operating out of Banská Bystrica during the 1944 uprising, and the way audiences learned to read between the lines under communist-era censorship. And it has meant memory: the chores waiting before parents came home from work, the roar of an ETA vacuum cleaner, summer camps with campfire songs and a child who cried on the first night and would not leave on the last, mornings organised around a grandmother's errands. The second track is the lesson, and here the show is methodical. A single conjunction such as že or či can carry an entire segment, and one episode walks through the coordinating set, a, ale, no, alebo and preto among them, each with its meaning and one or two example sentences. Each example is read in Slovak, translated, and usually read once more so the ear catches it. One episode sorts subordinate clauses into their Slovak categories, object clause and attributive clause among them, with the pronouns that introduce each. Others build around a verb such as vybaviť or a proverb such as 'Lepšie raz vidieť, ako stokrát počuť'. Practical phrases anchor every lesson, from 'Would you be able to help me?' to 'Enjoy it while you can' and 'I need to get a passport'. Some episodes end with a short dialogue in Slovak. Bonus episodes are a different animal, and Božena says so on air. They are shorter, straight to the point, and skip the stories and legends entirely, so a listener who wants only the grammar has somewhere to go. The regular episodes are the reason to stay. A lesson on sentence connectors sits next to an account of an afternoon in socialist Czechoslovakia with no Instagram to measure it against, and the two halves inform each other: the culture makes the vocabulary worth having, and the vocabulary makes the culture reachable.
