Jewish questions with emotional and intellectual weight.

The gist

18Forty Podcast treats Jewish life as something argued through, lived with, and felt in public. Its episodes move from aliyah logistics and addiction recovery to yeshiva history, Modern Orthodox outreach, Purim comedy, and Jewish mysticism.

About 18Forty Podcast

18Forty Podcast is an intellectually serious, emotionally attentive show about Jewish thought and Jewish life. It does not treat religion as a clean answer sheet. It lingers in the places where identity, family, text, obligation, community, and longing press against one another. Recent episodes show that range clearly. One conversation follows David and Sydney Magerman through the meaning and logistics of a child making aliyah, including support, independence, and the uneven practical realities of the process. Another episode with Shaanan Gelman and his son speaks directly about addiction, outpatient rehab, honesty with therapists, and the painful shift from blurred lines to fuller truth-telling. The show can be intimate. It can also be deeply conceptual. With Yakov Danishefsky, it considers how Torah and Halacha speak with the inner world rather than simply overriding it or dissolving into personal feeling. That tension gives the show much of its force. It respects inherited forms while asking what happens when a person feels resentment, distance, confusion, or desire for meaning inside those forms. Its historical lane is just as active, with episodes on the American yeshiva world, Lakewood Yeshiva, and denominational questions around Modern Orthodox outreach and kiruv. These are not only institutional topics. They become questions about passion, accessibility, cultural fluency, and the way communities invite or fail to invite others in. The show also makes room for cultural interpretation, as in an episode connecting Garry Shandling, Judd Apatow, Purim, comedy, fame, pain, yahrzeit, and memory. Its mystical register appears in conversations about free will, divinity, and what it means for choice to exist in essential moments. Across these episodes, 18Forty favors curiosity over tidy closure. It is learned, but not detached. It is communal, but willing to name fracture. The best fit is a listener drawn to Judaism as an active conversation: sometimes historical, sometimes therapeutic, sometimes theological, and often all three at once.

Made for: For listeners interested in Jewish thought, Orthodox community life, religious identity, and the personal stakes behind belief and practice. It especially suits people who like long-form conversations that connect Torah language to family, history, mental health, and contemporary Jewish choices.

What sets it apart: 18Forty stands out by letting high-level Jewish ideas sit beside raw lived experience: aliyah paperwork, rehab, Seder-table resentment, yeshiva history, comedy, and mysticism all belong in the same frame. Its tone is searching and literate without losing human texture.
