This is a brief one-on-one interview with new Utah transfer defensive tackle Lucas Samsula conducted during spring football 2026. Samsula came from Wyoming, where he faced Utah's offensive line as an opponent, which he calls the best line he has ever played against—a factor that made Utah's offer in the transfer portal compelling. He describes the Utah program as culture-heavy in a way that reminded him of his previous school and says the coaching staff is at a higher level than anything he has experienced. He is 6-foot-4 and 309 pounds, and identifies his primary value to the defensive tackle room as a run-stopper who fills gaps. Defensive line coach Luther Ellis, who played in the NFL for 10 years and has sons currently in the league, emphasizes what he calls 'the boring stuff'—fundamentals—and Samsula says Ellis's experience makes the coaching credible and worth following. Fellow defensive linemen Carson and Pupu have served as on-campus mentors, helping Samsula find classes on day one and conducting additional walkthroughs to reinforce new defensive concepts. By the end of spring ball, Samsula says he feels comfortable running the defensive scheme and expects to be a contributor.
