Commander Shaw's voice cuts off as she asks, 'Did any of you just see that?' before all feeds go black.

The story opens with narrator Bellamy at the lander window, watching Earth shine from the moon's surface alongside four crewmates: Commander Amelia Shaw, geological specialist Andrew Radcliffe, mechanical engineer Diana Figueroa, medical specialist Noah Thornton, and the narrator. The crew is celebrating the first lunar landing since 1972. Bellamy agrees to stay behind in the lander while the others take the LRV rover to the Taurus Littrow valley to plant a flag near the site their predecessors had used. The rover is equipped with cameras feeding to monitors at the control panel, keeping Bellamy almost present. After two hours, Commander Shaw begins wrapping up sample collection and tells the crew to return -- then her voice sharpens as she asks if anyone else saw something. The question hangs. Noah goes quiet. Then the narrative cuts to the approach of the rover returning, but something is wrong with the count -- the people in the rover are not the number that left. The story builds tension around what the crew encountered, what it did to them, and the moment someone or something knocks on the airlock door from outside, asking to be let in. The horror escalates through the question of whether the figure outside is a crewmate or something else. The title phrase open the airlock becomes a demand, then a plea, then something else entirely.
