S2E5: Read Me For Filth

·25 min·10 clips
It opens in full romance-novel heat. Cece, Ann, and the rest of the crew are already deep in book husband talk and petty commentary when the office banter starts to drift off the rails. The show does not really warm up so much as drop the listener straight into a room where fictional men are being treated like a live issue. The jokes come fast. Everybody keeps cutting in on everybody else, and the comedy lives in the overlap, the reactions, and the way one person’s obsession becomes everybody’s problem. The office talk keeps wandering toward romance, fantasy, and the familiar question of why real men cannot seem to compete with the ones on the page. Then the hangover lands. Cece is wrecked, smells like jalapenos from last night, and everybody is trying to act functional while still sounding half gone. The rescue package shows up in the form of coffee, donuts, and a homemade hangover blend made with lemon, ginger, banana, spinach, and coconut water. Bradley and Fabian also roll in looking different enough to make everybody do a double take. The women clock the glow-up immediately. They notice the muscles, the tattoos, the glasses, the jewelry, the curls, and the general sense that these two have wandered into a much more distracting version of themselves. The workday turns into a running appraisal of sudden fine-ness. What should be a normal check-in becomes a full office report on desire, suspicion, and who has been body-snatched by a better-looking replacement. Ms. Cassandra steps in like the only person still trying to keep order in the same universe. She catches the strange energy right away and pulls the women aside for the skinny on what is going on with Bradley and Fabian. By the end, even coffee and donuts feel like the opening move in a flirtation, and the closing invite lands less like small talk and more like a dare.
