Investigation :: Discoveries

October 30, 2018·30 min·2 clips
Nora's hidden research on RG48 and a clone named Nora Vass suggests she was killed for what she knew.
The episode opens with Richard and a young companion, Axel, reviewing data recovered from a server — Nora had been researching DNA strand integrity, chromosomal fraying, and something called RG48 in connection with a specific clone named Nora Vass. Nora kept RG48 off the server entirely, so the term remains undefined. The investigators review her personal logs from the Caracas outpost: she arrived after following a clue embedded in a creature called a Jeffrey, found the system wiped, and spent days reconstructing files while Axel lived nearby on leftover rations. In one log, Nora breaks down, saying she has found nothing, may have lied to Charles and Delilah, and wonders if clones will simply die as slaves. Back in the present, Diana erupts at the suggestion that Delilah's political lobbying can help clones, arguing that no government will treat as people a workforce designed to replace human labour. Another character defends Delilah's sacrifices. After the argument, Richard speaks privately with Diana and reveals that she loved Nora — that is why she wanted to find her. Diana confirms this and says she saw through Nora's composure for the first time. Returning to the logs, the trio establishes that Nora was pursuing 'the creator' through three approaches: research data, the outpost's physical contents, and communications from around the time the outpost was abandoned. Her final accessed file was a shipping invoice — a chartered vessel from roughly a month earlier. They trace the shipping company and dock at their station to find it silent and apparently abandoned. Inside a medical bay they discover Victor hiding in a cabinet, injured by a bite from unspecified creatures that overran the station. Victor confirms a clone was seen near the station about a month ago but gives no unit type. Mid-interview, Victor's head begins hurting and he collapses. His eyes are described as no longer human. The investigators grab what records they can and prepare to flee, uncertain whether Victor is dead or transforming.

As heard by us

A methodical space mystery that turns data, communications, and a shipping invoice into suspense.

The Orphans builds its investigation with patient pressure. Nora's search for the creator threads through research, RG48, the outpost, a once-uninstalled reasoning unit, and a shipping invoice that widens the mystery instead of closing it down.
