Episode 4 - Euston, We Have a Problem

August 25, 2023·28 min·2 clips
Marshall Ronald emails the Duke's insurer to negotiate the return of the stolen Da Vinci, with no turning back.
Marshall Ronald starts at his keyboard. The email he is writing to Mark Dalrymple is polite, legal, and careful, but there is nothing tidy about what sits underneath it. Once he sends it, the plan becomes real. Dalrymple is the loss adjuster appointed by the Duke of Buccleuch's insurer, so he is the door Marshall needs to open. The plan needs someone who can handle a delicate handoff. Marshall suggests a without-prejudice meeting in Glasgow, hoping the painting can come back through an informal mediation-type process. It is a loaded email. The words are safe repatriation and finder's fee, but the pressure underneath is a missing masterpiece and several people waiting to be paid. Then the money gets specific. Two million pounds would sit in Marshall's account three days before the painting came back, though he could not touch it yet. Still, seeing that balance would change the temperature in any room. The narrator asks uncle Gordon how her dad reacted, and the answer is simple: he was excited. That reaction makes sense. The family memory turns the deal from an abstract recovery plan into something with cash flow and real-life pressure around it. Nobody gets all the money. Seven hundred thousand would go back to the current holders of the painting, legal costs had to be covered, and the rest would be split. Marshall gets a share. So do the narrator's dad, Jackie, Jay, and Frank, the two men with connections back to the gang holding the painting. Five people, one fragile bargain. For a moment, Marshall seems to have a working rapport with John Craig and a transaction that might actually happen. Then the shape changes. Just as the plan appears to be coming together, Craig shifts the goalposts: the team would still get the two million, but only after the painting was returned. Suddenly the pressure is on cash up front, trust, and timing.

As heard by us

A paper deal turns into a test of nerve, timing, and trust.

Marshall Ronald reaches the point of no return when he sends the email that makes the recovery plan feel much more real and risky. The episode is strongest when it keeps the money and the nerves in the same frame: the 2 million arrangement, the delay before the funds can be…
