The McIlwraith Statements · Ghostly Thistle

Episode 23 – Lucid dream

·23 min·2 clips
A nameless ghost reveals she was murdered by a client and her body thrown in a river — and that she gave away a daughter she never stopped thinking about.
The dream begins gently enough. The same small settlement keeps returning: stone cottages, chimney smoke, dirt roads, and people moving through with baskets, sacks, and buckets. But it never repeats cleanly. The place stays; the scenes change. That makes it feel less like a looping dream and more like a life she has slipped back into. The host does not pretend to know what it means, but reincarnation becomes harder to wave away, especially when Mrs. McIlwraith feels so familiar from the inside. Her ghost sight has come with her, or maybe it belonged to that life before the dream ever started. Either way, it is dangerous. The host makes a dry distinction between witch trials and what came after them, because a woman like Mrs. McIlwraith would have had reason to keep her head down. The villagers know about the gift. They just do not say much unless they need a problem handled. Anne brings that problem to her door. A room in the brothel has started acting wrong. First come the doors and windows, then a cold the fire cannot shift. Then sounds from an empty room. Patrons get shoved out, rumours spread, and business suffers. Mrs. McIlwraith wants no part of it. Still, she asks questions. The nasty little truth is that everyone knows what she can do, and they will stay quiet until her fear becomes useful. The episode ends with the host confirming Episode 25 as the season finale and, for the foreseeable future, the last of The McIlwraith Statements.

As heard by us

A dreamlike brothel haunting ties fear to rumor, shame, and duty.

Episode 23 keeps returning to a recurring dream set in a village of stone cottages. The details are vivid enough to carry the scene on their own: dirt roads, chimneys, carts, horses, and women in white linen caps.
