Episode 14 – Breakthrough

August 21, 2019·21 min·1 clip
A ghost moves down a corridor by appearing closer with every blink, then passes through the narrator's body, freezing her organs and dropping her to the floor.
The episode opens with the narrator, Sarah, apologising for the delay in reaching this part of her account. She admits her guilt has been growing as she has investigated who funded the paranormal study she worked on, and that she can no longer deny the connection between her past and something dangerous. She frames the episode as the story of the last medium the study recruited. Sarah provides context: by this point in the study, conducted over three years, no medium had demonstrated anything beyond chance, and no paranormal phenomenon had been captured by any device. The asylum investigated in this episode is a Gothic Victorian building in Scotland with a high-profile haunting reputation; TV series have filmed there. The building's owner wants the team to declare it clean and is willing to pay substantially, but Dr Strother refuses the conditional assignment and keeps the right to report honestly. The team arrives at the asylum on a weekend in late winter. A property manager named Malcolm opens the building for them. A young man named Ewan Brodie arrives separately — described as a referral-only medium who rarely takes assignments and who is known in psychological circles as possibly the most genuinely gifted medium in existence. The study's lead, Dr Strother, invited Brodie but received no response; his appearance is a surprise. Inside the asylum, Sarah and Ken set up equipment systematically across the three floors. Sarah observes small wisps of spirits that vanish when she looks directly at them. On the first floor, she sees one drift into a room and immediately encounters Ewan Brodie, who asks if she saw something. She denies it; Brodie appears unconvinced and tells her they are the same. Later, alone in a corridor, Sarah sees a woman who does not respond when addressed. The woman's expression darkens and she approaches by appearing closer with each blink rather than walking normally. She passes straight through Sarah's body, producing a cold, painful, and emotionally overwhelming sensation. Sarah collapses to the floor. When she comes to, Ewan Brodie is beside her and again presses her to admit what she saw. She denies it again. In a present-day aside, Sarah reveals she noticed a suspicious couple at a bank and later saw the same couple driving behind her. Given the recent break-in at Dr Strother's family home, she wonders if she is being followed. She considers taking a break from the investigation and notes she has been running into dead ends in her effort to find the director of Inverlewis. The episode ends with a note that the season finale will follow the next week.

As heard by us

A patient, haunted return to the study's end, where guilt and doubt finally stop keeping their distance.

This episode returns to the study's end and the guilt the narrator has carried for nearly three years. Its strength is the steady grip on concrete detail: the asylum, the van, and Ewan Brodie's arrival.
