A noblewoman's casual defense of eugenics triggers a memory in Chartrulean of rescuing a Jardakai infant from people who hunted the boy for the crime of being born.

Episode 2 enters through dread. Chartrullian steps into a room where the happiness feels staged, almost compulsory. Everyone notices him. His black clothes set him against guests whose smiles do not seem to reach anything solid, so his grief reads like a breach of manners. A companion prods him about the expensive hat, the unwanted gift, and the need for an excuse. It turns etiquette into something small and sharp. Chartrullian wants out, not another introduction. Yoba, tied up with duties and spies, leaves him in the crowd with a warning about wallflowers. Then the Rao ambassadors arrive. Their height, heavy-styled hair, feathered capes, and sickly posture give the room a polished diplomatic unease. One look changes the temperature. The green-haired ambassador locks onto Chartrullian, and even Yoba goes pale. Courtesy comes in with teeth. The ambassador names him as the shipbuilder whose nine ships showed force beyond a third of their armada. Chartrullian offers regret for the losses. The answer rejects mourning and turns destruction into opportunity, dressing devastation as interplanetary cooperation. Nobody has to shout. The threat sits inside names, titles, and the calm way power turns blood into policy. Chartrullian chooses air, climbs the balustrade in one motion, and disappears into the night.
