The Jill Bennett Show · CKNW / Curiouscast

The biggest mistakes people make during tax season

April 10, 2026·43 min·3 clips
A former Canadian ambassador explains why the U.S. is negotiating for something it already had before attacking Iran.
The tax deadline is getting closer. After a quick show setup that mentions the Middle East and Vancouver housing, Jill Bennett pulls the conversation back to tax-season problems people can actually fix. Bo Jarvis starts with a common one: a return has already been filed, but something is wrong. His answer is simple enough. You can refile through consumer software like Ufile or amend the return through CRA My Account. Bennett picks up on the part most people feel in their bones, which is that government filing rarely sounds simple. That gives Jarvis room to explain why the portal is worth using. He is very high on CRA My Account because it can show old assessments, tax slips, and the details people need when their own records are scattered. The T-slip point lands well. Since issuers also send copies to the CRA, someone who is not especially organized may still be able to pull those slips online. Bennett then moves into registered accounts. Jarvis separates TFSA contributions, RRSP withdrawals, and FHSA room-and-limit information without turning the segment into tax fog. TFSA contributions are not deductible. The upside is that TFSA withdrawals are tax free, while RRSP withdrawals are taxable. Limits still count. Jarvis warns that going over a TFSA limit can mean monthly penalties, so the room shown in the portal is not just a housekeeping detail. FHSA room comes up as another amount the portal can show. The point is plain: do not guess at limits, missing slips, or filing corrections when CRA My Account may already have the answer. Bennett keeps steering the conversation toward real consequences. The segment is most useful for anyone close to deadline who needs to fix a mistake, find documents, or understand why registered accounts behave differently at filing time.

As heard by us

Clear tax guidance, with a brief housing detour for context.

The episode opens with Middle East ceasefire coverage before moving into tax-season advice and a housing segment, which gives it a wider sweep than a simple service update.
