Coach Jeff Podcast #664 – Cycling Podcast #023 – The Old Bum Pt 4

February 23, 2018·48 min·4 clips
Ian's dream cycling trip turned into a storm-chased nightmare after leaving Brisbane.
Coach Jeff starts with the housekeeping: podcast number 664, the 24th of February 2018, and episode 23 of The Cycling Podcast. Ian Stapleton is back, introduced again as the old bum on a bike, and Jeff says they will hear what he has been doing over the last couple of months. Most of the episode is about camp food. Ian runs through tinned chicken, salmon, tuna, spam, corned beef, chickpeas, and red kidney beans as proper camp options. He is not trying to make it fancy. He wants to show that cheap tins can still turn into decent meals, including a mince-style spaghetti bolognese. Cost is the point. Dehydrated hiking meals come up as the obvious comparison, and Ian is careful about them. He has not tried them, so he does not judge the taste. He has checked the prices, though, and his version is far cheaper, even if it takes about 15 minutes to cook. Jeff chips in like a mate, then has to check whether Ian can still hear him because the lights on his control panel keep vanishing. The glitch fits the whole thing. Once the audio is fine, Jeff says hiking meals can be good but painfully expensive. Camp cooking starts to sound like part of the ride, not a chore. Jeff likes the idea that, after stopping for the night, making food becomes part of relaxing into the holiday. Ian calls his routine a ritual. The close is warm and loose, with Jeff pointing listeners toward Ian on social media and YouTube. Recipes from the roadside gets a friendly send-off. Jeff skips the music because they have gone way over time, or nearly have, then signs off before heading out for his own ride.
