717 - In Tenebris

November 3, 2021·24 min·1 clip
A philosophy-minor jock dismantles Adam's assumptions about love, identity, and 'bucking the norm' in one speech.
The episode opens with Adam and Sadie watching Caleb struggle at flag football, establishing their easy rapport through banter about his athleticism versus his lack of dexterity. Conversation turns to Caitlin, Cole, and Frankie's romantic idealism, with Sadie describing Frankie as someone who loves love and roots for his friends' happiness. Adam reveals he hasn't found his person yet and articulates a belief that people shouldn't settle down young, prompting Sadie to push back sharply. She argues that rejecting the idea of marrying a high school sweetheart purely to defy convention is itself a form of conformity — not independent thinking. Adam is stunned by her clarity, and she reveals she is a philosophy minor who enjoys debating free will and moral truths. The conversation shifts to fear of doing life wrong, and Sadie gently but directly tells Adam that his hesitation about Caleb is rooted in fear, not wisdom, and that he needs to talk to him. Their conversation is interrupted when they spot Caitlin heading into Russell Library alone at night. Adam tries to call her but gets no answer, and the group — now including Caleb and Frankie — debates whether to go in after her. Frankie reveals Caitlin had been acting strangely, talking about needing to figure something out, suggesting she went in deliberately. Despite concerns about walking into a trap, the group decides to enter, with Adam guiding them since the library is his favorite campus spot. Inside, the library is unnervingly empty. Adam leads them to a grate in the floor where he previously saw strange activity, and they discover a hidden trap door behind the information desk leading to a basement. They descend and immediately encounter hostile atypicals, including a woman named Alexis who produces fire from her hand and a man named Neil. A chaotic fight breaks out; Sadie uses her electropathy offensively for the first time, and Caleb freezes momentarily before helping Adam. The group escapes, finding themselves inexplicably at Hill House rather than near the library, suggesting Neil can manipulate space. Caitlin, who had been briefly kidnapped, rejoins them and explains what she learned: Professor Blackwell, an older man connected to the group, plans a ritual on Halloween using a mysterious book to remake the world. The ritual requires a human participant — a sacrifice — and Ben was the original target, then Caitlin. With both now free, Blackwell will seek someone else. The group has one day to identify his next target and stop the ritual. As they head back to the apartment, Caitlin pulls Caleb aside and confronts him: she overheard him on the phone with someone named Oliver and noticed she felt unnaturally happy when the group arrived. She asks Caleb directly what an empath can do beyond feeling emotions, implying she suspects he manipulated her feelings, and demands he stop hiding things from her.
