Ranking January Transfer Deals (Plus Maresca & Amorim Out!)

January 7, 2026·1 hr 4 min·5 clips
Sam Tai returns to Ranks FC as Chelsea and Man United sack managers Maresca and Amorim in a chaotic start to 2026.
Derek Ray opens the door. Pretty quickly, this is a reunion episode as much as a transfer rankings pod, with Sam Tai back and Jack getting dragged for not being there. Prep work is treated like a small scandal, which is exactly the old Ranks rhythm: someone brings a list, someone else pokes holes in it, and the football gets better once the room has loosened up. Then Brennan Johnson takes over. The Tottenham question is about timing as much as talent: contract pressure, whether selling before a renewal conversation makes sense, and whether the reported Palace link works in football terms instead of just looking tidy in a headline. Palace come out of it as believable buyers, but not because Johnson is made out to be the same kind of player as the other attacking names around them. The point is simpler. If spaces open up, a different sort of wide player can still be useful. The caveats do a lot of the work. Johnson is not treated as the same level or style as the Palace players being discussed, but he is still talked about as a good player and a real option for an incoming manager. Palace also cannot sell everyone. The funniest stretch is the mounting absurdity of every rumoured Palace figure leaving at once, from Mateta and Wharton to Munoz, Guehi, and Glasner. Someone has to stay on the ship. Once enough people have gone, one of the remaining lads simply gets told he is not allowed off. Tottenham's fee gets pulled apart from both sides. Around 35 million after paying about 47 or 48 million sounds like a hit, and technically it is. But the accounting point stops the take from sitting there too comfortably: Johnson is described as costing Spurs about nine and a half million a year on the books, with around 24 million left, and his goals count in the value conversation too. That is where the episode is sharpest. A transfer is not just a fee. It is contract management, squad planning, timing, and a tired bit of common sense. Jack returns as a punchline near the end, supposedly distant from football while listening to Fulham commentary over Copacabana and turning up in a Brazil shirt at a stadium. Football is still in the bloodstream. Sam Tai's return, the Patreon housekeeping, and the promise to be back next week all orbit the main job: ranking deals by how they actually work, not how loud they sound.

As heard by us

Transfer talk with enough numbers to tighten the argument and enough banter to keep it lively.

Ranks FC keeps the discussion on transfers rather than letting it drift into noise, with Sam Tai in the building, Jack absent, and the early chat settling into a proper football debate.
