Trans On The Road In The Deep South

Terrence says 1971 therapy told him to talk to his dead father in an empty chair.
Queer Storytime opens as a brave space. Episode 20 is an on-the-road conversation, recorded while Stevie Ingram is in the middle of moving from Arizona to the Chicago area and riding along with today's guest. No grounding practice leads the way. Stevie tells listeners that there is extra video for the episode on the QST YouTube channel and that he has announcements about the podcast's future waiting at the end. He then moves straight into the interview. Terrence is introduced as a 71-year-old transgender man, and Stevie asks how he first discovered that he was trans. The answer reaches back to childhood. Terrence says the word trans was not part of his vocabulary when he was young, though he was always masculine, always called a tomboy, and always thought of himself as a boy. His hormones came later. He says he started hormone treatment at 37, and Stevie notes that they began transition around the same time in their mid-30s. The exchange stays close to timing and memory. When Stevie asks how Terrence initially navigated sexual transition, Terrence says he did not really navigate it at first. Family history enters. He explains that it was his eldest sister, not his mother, who picked up on the clues and sent him a book and workbook called *Victim No More*. That intervention shifted the language. Terrence says it helped him begin to address what had happened and understand that what his father did was not right, but inappropriate. He keeps the memory complicated. He says he never regretted any of it, even while acknowledging that his father should not have done it and that, from a sexual point of view, he cannot say it was unpleasant. Stevie follows the tension. His questions about the gap between what Terrence felt and what he later learned move the conversation toward psychology and conversion therapy.
