Nightmares by From Ashes Rise (2003)

A patron sponsors an episode on From Ashes Rise's 2003 album Nightmares, a crust record that the hosts might not have chosen themselves.

1. Punk Lotto Pod hosts Justin and Dylan Hensley review 'Nightmares,' the 2003 neo-crust album by From Ashes Rise on Jade Tree Records, in a patron-sponsored episode chosen by supporter Jason. 2. Justin Hensley is the primary host and Dylan Hensley is his co-host; the show covers punk, hardcore, emo, and punk-adjacent albums chosen at random by year, except for sponsored episodes. 3. The episode's framing question is whether a 2003 crust album built around political rage is still relevant in the current political climate — Jason's sponsorship note argues explicitly that it is. 4. Dylan opens with a survey of 2003 as arguably the last year of mainstream guitar dominance, citing The Strokes' 'Room on Fire,' White Stripes' 'Elephant,' and Yeah Yeah Yeahs' 'Fever to Tell' as the garage rock and post-punk revival peak. 5. The mall-emo wave of 2003 included Brand New's 'Deja Entendu,' Fall Out Boy's 'Take This to Your Grave,' Thursday's 'War All the Time,' AFI's 'Sing the Sorrow,' and Dashboard Confessional — all findable at Hot Topic. 6. The Exploding Hearts' 'Guitar Romantic' is mentioned as a significant 2003 record, with Justin noting they covered it in an episode with Dr. Goodfriend Corey; the band later died in a van crash. 7. Metalcore's mainstream moment in 2003 included Avenged Sevenfold's 'Waking the Fallen,' As I Lay Dying's 'Frail Words Collapse,' Trivium's 'Ember to Inferno,' and Every Time I Die's 'Hot Damn' — described as early innovators of Southern-inflected metalcore from Buffalo. 8. NOFX's 'War on Errorism' and the Dillinger Escape Plan's 'Coral Fang' are cited as part of the anti-Iraq-War punk context that also shaped From Ashes Rise's political content on 'Nightmares.' 9. Patron sponsor Jason explains in a written note that he chose the album because his music has gotten heavier as he has aged rather than mellower, and he listens to From Ashes Rise because he is still angry — framing the album as emotionally necessary in the current political environment. 10. Dylan discloses he has no actual prior listening experience with From Ashes Rise and can only guess at their general sound, making the episode a genuine first encounter rather than a revisit for him. 11. Dylan's crust-adjacent listening centres on His Hero Is Gone, Tragedy, Cursed, and Tharsis They — noting that he tends toward grind and power violence rather than crust proper, with French D-beat band Bombardment as his current active listen. 12. From Ashes Rise was originally formed in Nashville, Tennessee in 1997 by drummer Dave Etchison and guitarist Brad Boatwright, with various early members including vocalist Marshall Perdue and bassist Jason Piercy. 13. Bassist Billy Davis — who had previously played in Tennessee bands Face Down, Cop Out, and Death Threat — joined the band, then left mid-membership to move to Portland and co-found Tragedy. 14. After Billy Davis rejoined for the 2003 split with Swedish crust band Victims while still living in Portland, the impossibility of long-distance rehearsals caused the entire band to relocate to Portland. 15. This migration connects From Ashes Rise geographically to Tragedy and His Hero Is Gone as a Tennessee scene that collectively moved to Portland, creating what became the de facto home of neo-crust. 16. Producer Matt Bales, who engineered 'Nightmares,' had already worked on Botch's 'American Nervosa' and 'We Are the Romans,' Isis' 'Celestial,' and Deftones' 'Around the Fur' by 2003, making him a well-established name in heavy music production. 17. Jade Tree Records in 2003 also released Strike Anywhere's 'Exit English,' Kid Dynamite's 'Cheap Shots and Youth Anthems' compilation, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, and Joan of Arc — an eclectic roster that makes From Ashes Rise's presence there notable. 18. The episode's tone is conversational and tangential, with extensive digressive sections on subgenre taxonomy, regional punk scenes (Tennessee, Greensboro, Asheville, Charlotte), and whether distinctions like D-beat, crust, neo-crust, and stenchcore are meaningful. 19. Punk and hardcore listeners who enjoy scene-history deep dives, subgenre debates, and conversational album reviews with genuine first-listen dynamics would find this compelling. 20. Listeners seeking structured album track-by-track analysis or who are unfamiliar with crust and neo-crust as genres will find the heavy tangential discussion of adjacent bands and scenes more challenging to follow.

As heard by us

A scene-heavy listen that turns one hardcore record into a wider early-2000s punk discussion.

Nightmares by From Ashes Rise is treated less like a standalone album and more like one point in an early-2000s punk conversation. Justin and Dylan keep it tied to nearby records and scenes, and the discussion moves through crust, orgcore, melodic hardcore, emo, and producer…
