David LeBlanc keeps pressing the guest on why a secular educational path gave way to religious study. The guest connects that choice to a father who did not want to pay for his schooling and to a sense that something needed to be repaired. He says he wanted closure. He also wanted wholeness and satisfaction from learning. The conversation then shifts to Messianic Judaism and to the reading that changed his direction. Reading Messianic Judaism by Rabbi Shapiro, together with hearing outside criticism, lands hard enough that the guest says he was done with Messianic Judaism. By then he had already started studying Hebrew. He also had experience stepping into Jewish spaces before any clean break. In Santa Maria, the family went to Passover at Chabad and to Shabbat at Chabad, which he describes as a wonderful, very small environment with big meals, blessings, and a festive atmosphere. He says the Messianic movement in Dallas also took them to the JCC for various holidays and festivals. So entering Jewish life never felt like a foreign act. What he wanted was to see how Jews did these things. He wanted to do them the way they do them and to see how it was without Jesus in the middle. That is where he begins to notice the mismatch of Jesus being placed inside these practices. The conversation stays informal and reflective, and by the end it reads as a plain account of moving from Messianic Judaism toward Jewish practice.
