An "On Purpose" chat with Artist/Writer Steve Chapman("Creative Adventures-An Accidental Podcast")!

February 4, 2026·37 min·2 clips
Steve Chapman says being 'fascinated' rather than merely 'interested' is the first rule of a creative life — fascination grips you and you cannot not pursue it.
Steve Chapman likes the small room. Jim starts with the shape of Creative Adventures, an accidental podcast built around stream-of-consciousness narration and making things on his own terms. Chapman is not chasing popularity. He says the work changes once he starts making art for an audience he has invented in his head, instead of following the impulse that got him there. Jim gets the point fast: let the audience come to the work, rather than bending the work toward the audience. Chapman agrees. He would rather have a smaller group that actually feels connected than a big crowd that turns into numbers on a screen. Too much growth can take the fun out of it. He even admits that projects can stop exciting him once they get too large. Creative Adventures keeps the setup plain on purpose. It is one person, no adverts, no guests, and a few rough edges left in. Outside sound sometimes sneaks through. Chapman brings up outside noise, a motorbike, and a crow outside the window as part of the handmade feel. Jim then turns to Sound of Silence, an earlier project that came from Chapman's curiosity about what the opposite of a podcast might be. The tone stays loose and amused. Chapman calls it conceptual art, then lightly pokes at the idea himself. Jim closes in Sherpa mode, circling back to his back catalog, future guests, and the friendly Sherpa-lution signoff after a chat about keeping the making part alive.
