NutraCast: Ritual’s defining prenatal health research

·23 min·2 clips
Ritual's prenatal vitamin is now the first leading prenatal backed by its own human clinical trial, challenging an industry norm.
The episode begins with host Danielle Masterson introducing the topic of prenatal vitamins and Ritual's mission to build trusted women's health brands through science. She is joined by Dr. Massana Sharafi, a registered dietitian and Senior VP at Ritual, who explains that Ritual's essential prenatal is now backed by a human clinical trial, a rarity in the industry. Dr. Sharafi details how the trial came about, noting that pregnant women have been overlooked in clinical research, with current guidelines relying on outdated data. The trial was a 24-week double-blind randomized control study, longer than typical supplement studies, allowing tracking of changes in maternal blood, cord blood, and placenta. It compared Ritual's product to a leading prenatal plus DHA supplement for ethical reasons. Dr. Sharafi reveals that most consumers are unaware that many prenatals lack human clinical testing, leading to frustration. She explains there is no regulated definition for prenatal supplements in the U.S., meaning products can vary widely in nutrient content. Key findings from the trial include that 29% of women on the leading prenatal exceeded safe folic acid intake levels, while 100% on Ritual's remained below, and Ritual's product improved biotin status significantly. Other results showed lower cortisol levels, better maternal triglyceride levels, and positive user experiences. Recruitment for the trial took over six months due to the vulnerability of pregnancy, emphasizing the need for trust. The trial included 67% participants identifying as Black, Indigenous, and people of color, prioritizing diversity. Dr. Sharafi discusses Ritual's partnership with Serena Williams as a women's health advisor, aligning with advocacy for maternal care, especially for Black women. The conversation covers the FDA's new draft guidance on including pregnant and breastfeeding women in clinical trials, which Dr. Sharafi sees as a positive step. She argues that private companies like Ritual should lead in inclusive research to address equity gaps. Looking ahead, Ritual aims to have a clinical study behind every product by 2030, with ongoing trials and peer-reviewed submissions. The episode concludes with Masterson thanking Dr. Sharafi for insights into Ritual's commitment to transparency and women's health.
