Christ in Leviticus | The Torah E3 | Jack Long

·28 min·2 clips
Jack Long argues that Leviticus, often seen as tedious, contains the Bible's most fundamental ideas about sacrifice and holiness.
This episode is part seven of the 'Christ in Scripture' series at NorthernLife Baptist Church, where Jack Long preaches on the book of Leviticus. Long begins by acknowledging Leviticus' reputation for tedium due to its lists of rules but asserts its profound significance in pointing to Jesus. He positions Leviticus as the third book of the Torah, central to bridging the gap between God and humanity created in Genesis 3. Long recaps the biblical narrative from Eden to Exodus, highlighting how God's presence in the tabernacle still left Israel unable to approach Him due to sin. He explains that Leviticus aims to create a holy community through laws and rituals. Long breaks down holiness into three areas: ethical holiness (chapters 18-21), involving moral behavior like avoiding adultery and caring for the poor; ritual holiness (chapters 11-15), dealing with clean/unclean categories related to worship; and priestly holiness (chapters 1-7, 16), involving priests and sacrifices. For ethical holiness, Long shows how Jesus intensifies Levitical laws, such as turning 'do not murder' into 'do not call your brother a fool'. For ritual holiness, he describes Jesus' healing of a leper in Luke 5 as demonstrating contagious holiness that cleanses the unclean. For priestly holiness, Long explains the sin and guilt offerings, where blood represents life and cleanses sin, culminating in the Day of Atonement. He notes that Israel's system ultimately failed because sin runs too deep. Long concludes by showing how Jesus fulfills Leviticus as both high priest and sacrifice, entering heaven with His own blood to cleanse consciences permanently, as described in Hebrews 9. The sermon closes with a prayer of thanksgiving for this restoration.
