The Queen Mother Who Refused to Die

April 7, 2026·34 min·2 clips
Idia made everyone else around her believe in magic, and the prestige she derived from that underpinned almost every move she made.
Idia begins as an argument about power. The host places her inside Edo culture, where alleged sorcery and witchcraft could make some women feared, respected, and hard to ignore. Magic is not treated like decoration here. Female priestesses, diviners, and people said to command the metaphysical world could hold influence that rivaled men, sometimes passed them outright. That changes the usual shape of the story. In the European examples the host mentions, witchcraft accusations often became weapons against prominent women in the early sixteenth century. Benin looks different in this telling. The episode says modern sources present Idia as someone who could lean into a supernatural reputation instead of only surviving it. She understood reputation as leverage. The point is not whether the magic was real. It is that Idia made people believe it mattered. Once belief took hold, status followed. That status helped carry her through danger, counsel, and court politics. Then the omen appears. In 1515, Oba Esigie's forces were already drained by the costly conflict with Aruhuan when the Ida army moved toward Benin City. An ibis flew over the soldiers and gave a chilling squawk. The diviners called it a sign of defeat and advised retreat. Idia refused that reading. She had come with her own army to support her son, and instead of giving way to panic or inherited expectation, she told him to have the bird shot. Esigie listened. Their combined forces won and defended their lands.

As heard by us

Idia of Benin turned sorcery into her sharpest political asset.

Noble Blood's episode on Idia, queen mother of Benin, opens with a sharp premise: in sixteenth-century Edo culture, a reputation for the supernatural was an asset for an ambitious woman rather than a liability.
