222 - Triathlon Lessons Helping with Life

·19 min
Todd Milcom starts with a road trip. He is driving his mother from Canada down to Arizona for the winter, leaving her with a car she can use there before he flies back to Canada. The trip gives him a fresh angle. He says the patience learned in triathlon kept showing up while he was dealing with waiting, uncertainty, and the kind of small chaos that turns a simple plan into a long day. He builds the episode around a few lessons. The first is patience, the kind you need before a race starts and the kind you need when you are stuck in the middle of a problem. That idea fits the travel story right away. A tire issue forces him to check the spare compartment, find a pump and sealant setup, and sort out what each hose is doing while he talks himself through the repair like he would with tubeless tires. He keeps at it. He repeats that he can do this, but the screw bolt in the tire will not come out and the sealant cannot fix the situation. Air will not stay in. The roadside stop drags on as he and his family wait for a tow truck and watch the plan get slower and messier. He calls roadside assistance again. That second call matters because nobody had actually been notified yet, so the follow-up gets things moving. His brother shows up to help. They move the luggage into the brother's pickup, and Todd tells his mother to take the dog and head back with his brother instead of trying to squeeze everyone into the tow truck. He waits for the tow truck himself. It is close enough now that it makes sense to stay put and ride back with it. From there he lands on the bigger point. Things usually work out, and he closes by saying he is the kind of person who relates nearly every problem to an Ironman, thanking listeners, pointing them toward his free triathlon guide, and sending them off with his usual happy training sign-off.
