Blankfor.ms and Aqeel Aadam - Collaborating, Production, Plug-in Making

·1 hr 12 min
Brian keeps the conversation practical. He brings in Aqeel Aadam and Tyler Gilmore, aka Blank Forms, to talk about Outgrowth, their new sample-based plugin and iOS app. The tool has a playful edge. Brian frames it as a way to manipulate samples and rethink them in unusual, lively ways. Collaboration is close to the center here. The guests explain how they came to work together, and plug-in making comes across less like a product chore and more like part of the art. There are tradeoffs, too. Brian names the sacrifices, which keeps the episode from turning into a neat product walkthrough. Tyler's album, After the Town Was Swept Away, fits into that same conversation about making records, making tools, and staying close to the work without letting it take the whole room. Then the parenthood question lands. Tyler talks about how having a two-year-old changes time in a way that sounds very concrete. Part of your brain is always somewhere else. Lunches, sleep, moods when he gets home, and that low background process all come up while he is talking about trying to make music. It is warm, but not polished into a lesson. The honest part is that a meaningful limitation can still be hard when adult life has been built around nights, weekends, and every loose hour. Brian asks the obvious craft question: has less time made Tyler more disciplined, sharper, more efficient in the studio and around sample packs. Tyler does not force the answer. He wanted that to be true, but the adjustment is messier, because he is still himself. That is where the episode has some bite. It keeps circling the gap between romantic creative momentum and the plain limits of a life that now includes someone depending on you.
