Against the Day: Chapter 10

The chapter opens with a bit of leftover housekeeping. Before the panel moves on, they ask whether Chapter 9 still has anything to give, then decide they have worked that ground hard enough. Then the Chums are back. After something like 60 or 70 pages offstage, their return feels less like the next scene and more like a fresh launch inside the book. A Tesla device comes aboard. The radio brings strange receptions, maybe recordings, and voices the boys cannot sort out yet. The uncertainty is the point. The panel ties it back to the earlier Tesla material because the technology still feels new, shaky, and a little spooky. The Chums are still teenagers, too. That keeps the conversation from turning every shipboard quarrel into solemn symbolic machinery, even when the book practically dares readers to do it. The figurehead dispute is funny first, all rivalry and theory, until it slides into physical comedy. Still, the laughs do not clean the scene up. One reader keeps saying the Chums can feel sinister even when the surface is bright. Then the wiki takes a hit. A note about compromise in the figurehead choice annoys the panel because compromise, to them, is not some tidy midpoint where every option gets averaged together. It is everyone walking away unhappy. That gripe turns into a bigger point about readers wanting neat explanations from a book that keeps refusing them. The candidate list stays ridiculous: McKinley, a naked woman, a national bird, food, and a Platonic solid all remain in play as proof that no clean symbolic answer was coming. By the end, the panel is talking about online reviewing itself, half amused and half unsettled by a site that might be artificially generated or might just contain 20,000 insane people.
