Oneshot: Democracy by Dice

February 17, 2026·1 hr 15 min·6 clips
In an idyllic town, community organizers must outsmart a corporate lobby scheming with bribery and misinformation.
The episode opens with host Amanda framing this as Join the Party's final one-shot, a bittersweet milestone for the long-running actual play podcast. She announces a grand after-party episode coming the following week and promotes a sale on Plant Pirate Dice and all remaining Join the Party merchandise. The one-shot is sponsored by Working Families Power through their World Builders Club project, a pop culture and political analysis newsletter. Amanda introduces the game, Democracy by Dice, designed by Fiona Shade and illustrated by Trent Ford, describing it as a no-prep one-shot RPG about community organizers fighting corporate lobbying on the eve of a local referendum. Brandon takes on the role of facilitator while also playing as a character, a dynamic the cast jokes about throughout. The group uses the game's organizer traits tables to build their characters, rolling or choosing occupations, hobbies, and hangout spots. Julia rolls a trade unionist with a DJ hobby who hangs out at religious centers, naming her character Gwen Parmesan after briefly considering Gwen Stefani and Gwen Parker. Eric chooses accountant as his occupation, adds torrenting as his hobby, and hangs out at the park, naming his character Jimmy Two-Top. Amanda rolls teacher with a music hobby and a local game store hangout, landing on the name Ricky Partee. Brandon rolls office clerk with a theater tech hobby and a home hangout, completing the four-person organizer team. The group then collaboratively builds their fictional town, Solidarity Springs, answering questions about food sources, leisure spaces, and community values. They establish oyster farming and wind farms on the water, solar panels on every roof, a CSA facilitated through a shop called the Apothecanary, and a new state-funded library with a 3D printer and attached theater called the Drama Wing. Cultural spaces include a seafaring museum that hosts weddings, a crafting studio with classes, a gaming space called Mixed Success for long board games, and a bookstore-coffee-bar called Two If By C. Brandon explains the core mechanics: players build a dice pool by invoking their organizer traits, with bonuses for collaboration and penalties based on the corporate lobby's current influence level. The corporate lobby starts at 80 influence points — 20 times the four-player count — and the players start at zero community unity, meaning they begin at a net minus-eight to all dice rolls. The mutual aid bonus rewards all players contributing dice in a single roll, and the social capital effect creates momentum in both directions as scores shift. The burnout mechanic is introduced as the most emotionally resonant rule: rolling ones accumulates burnout, and at three burnout a player must sit out a round to recover, but every recovery allows the corporate lobby to roll 1d6 and increase its influence. The episode closes with Brandon announcing they will play Scenario 3, titled Unionize, setting up the actual gameplay that follows.
