The Problem with Gig Work

May 2, 2023·52 min·3 clips
Heidi and Willie, two family providers, chose Shipt for its transparent pay, but a sudden algorithm change left them working harder for less.
Heidi starts with distance. After 16 years as an insurance agent on Florida's Treasure Coast, a third child makes the hourlong drive to North Palm Beach too much. Willie starts with downtime. In Denton, Texas, he is moving a construction business toward Florida while licensing slows things down. Both paths turn toward gig work. The episode treats that move less like freedom and more like stepping into a system where work, pay, and proof live on scattered screens. The pay stub becomes the object that matters. Workers keep albums of screenshots because the platform's own records do not clearly explain what happened. Drew tries to make the pay make sense. Comparing V1 and V2 does not produce a neat before-and-after story, because similar shops sometimes pay more and sometimes less. The algorithm does not give itself up easily. Drew can see the pattern is not linear, and a spreadsheet alone will not settle it. Dan Colacci comes in from MIT. He is a PhD candidate at the Media Lab, a former gig worker, and someone focused on helping workers use data already collected about them. The fix is not flashy. Code can turn screenshots into spreadsheet rows, which lets scattered evidence become shared leverage. Once shoppers can send in many screenshots, the question moves from one person's confusing pay to a collective map of a hidden system. The ending turns toward design, with a working delivery platform in Colorado offered as another way to think about algorithms, pay, restaurants, workers, and customers.

As heard by us

Gig workers document their own pay because the app won't -- and end up building something more.

The episode follows Heidi, a Florida insurance agent who moved to grocery delivery after her third child made a long commute untenable, and Willie Solis, a Texas construction worker bridging an income gap while waiting on a license.
