Winter Olympics Show-and-Tell

February 2, 2026·1 hr 16 min·7 clips
How did a U.S. figure skater qualify for the Olympics just a year after his parents died in a tragic plane crash?
Groundhog Day opens the door, and the panel walks straight into the odd stuff. Alex Kirshner sets up a quick swing through the Winter Olympics, Bill Belichick missing the Hall of Fame on the first try, and the faint, dangerous idea that the Buffalo Sabres might be good again. Lindsay Gibbs is ready for the assignment. The best stretch is Belichick, because the rejection is too messy to work as a clean moral verdict. Nobody melts into coach worship. Spygate and Deflategate stay on the table as fair reasons for people to be annoyed. Still, the show keeps poking at whether that explains denying him even the little ceremony of a first-ballot win. Bob Craft sits over the whole thing like a very expensive weather system. Canton procedure, old grudges, committee habits, and owner politics all start to feel jammed into the same ballot. Bill Pullian's fuzzy memory gets the dry treatment it deserves. If the vote had only three names and happened two weeks earlier, not remembering is not exactly reassuring. That is where this episode is most comfortable: sports governance as a room where rules matter, but pride, leaks, and personal history keep moving chairs around. Belichick's larger year gives the conversation some extra sting. His public image has already taken hits, and the Canton miss turns an expected victory lap into another weird little embarrassment. The sympathy meter barely moves, which feels about right for this show. The Winter Olympics segment keeps the episode from becoming all Belichick. The show-and-tell format skips the bland full-calendar preview and lets the panel grab the Olympic stories that interest them. Buffalo gets a wary little burst of hope too. The Sabres are maybe good, said with exactly the amount of suspicion that sentence requires. At the end, Slate Plus takes over with a bonus conversation on Novak Djokovic nearly breaking into the Carlos Alcaraz and Yannick Sinner grip on men's Grand Slam tennis before the show wraps with Groundhog Day business.
