Day 95

April 5, 2026·11 min·1 clip
After Joshua's death, Israel enters a cycle of idolatry, oppression by enemies, and deliverance by judges appointed by God.
The episode opens with the military actions of Judah and Simeon against the Canaanites and Perizzites at Bezek, where they capture King Adoni-Bezek and bring him to Jerusalem. Caleb offers his daughter Achsah in marriage to whoever captures Kiriath Sepher, which Othniel accomplishes. The text details various tribes' successes and failures in driving out the inhabitants of their allotted lands. The angel of the Lord appears at Bokim to deliver a message of rebuke, reminding Israel of God's deliverance from Egypt and their failure to destroy the altars of the land's inhabitants. After Joshua dies at age 110, a new generation arises that does not know the Lord or his deeds for Israel. Israel does evil in God's sight, serving the Baals and forsaking the Lord. God's anger burns against Israel, and he delivers them into the hands of plunderers. When Israel cries out, the Lord raises up judges who save them from their oppressors. Yet after each judge dies, the people return to corruption, worshiping other gods. God declares that because Israel has broken the covenant, he will no longer drive out the nations Joshua left. The episode then transitions to 2 Corinthians 9, where Paul discusses generous giving. He encourages preparation in advance so that gifts are ready as a blessing, not given grudgingly. God loves a cheerful giver and is able to bless abundantly so that believers have all they need for every good work. Generosity results in thanksgiving to God and proves the service of believers. The supply of seed to the sower will increase the harvest of righteousness.
