Stories from ‘Saturday Night Live’

Maya Rudolph describes meeting Barack Obama twice — first dressed as Shirley MacLaine, then dressed as Barack Obama — and Obama's only feedback was 'I don't wear a three-button suit.'
Amy opens in celebration. After 52 episodes, Good Hang turns into a quick, affectionate run through stories from Saturday Night Live. The energy still feels casual. She runs through people who have come by the show, including Maya Rudolph, Seth Meyers, Martin Short, Andy Samberg, Tina Fey, Jack Black, Rachel Dratch, Kristen Wigg, and Ana Gasteyer. Mary Ellen Matthews brings it backstage first. Amy talks about her as the photographer behind favorite pictures of favorite people, then uses that to ask what it takes to work inside that very strange place. From there, the bits pile up. One story moves from Bill Hader to Fred and lands on a fake Paul-name joke that gets funnier because everyone heard it wrong. Tony McCartney sounds like nothing. Somehow it works, because the room treats the mistake like a tiny souvenir from people who live inside jokes. Fred becomes the chaos engine. He sends fake flight pickup details, greets friends like strangers at parties, and keeps little performances going long after most people would drop them. Amy keeps coming back to the craft under the silliness. The conversation circles how SNL turns exhaustion, rejected sketches, and bad nights into stories that hurt for a second and get funny later. The honk it sketch is the keeper. Amy and Emily Spivey write it one night, believe in it completely, then hear the blunt production answer: giant truck cabs are not happening. The rejection still stings, but Amy finds the funny need under it, the wish to be on the show too. The ending stays messy in the right way. A memory about waiting out noise, calling out David Spade, and throwing in a Pierce Brosnan line feels less like polished nostalgia than friends replaying a night they can still hear.
