Maisel Goys 507-509

June 19, 2023·1 hr 49 min·10 clips
Alice reveals how Midge's boundary violation triggered her own past trauma with industry exploitation.
The final Prime synopsis says almost nothing. Somehow that fits, because Kevin and Alice have to bring the feeling themselves as they get to 509, the last Marvelous Mrs. Maisel episode. Alice is already crying. Kevin notices, keeps the bit alive, and still lets the room feel like a finale instead of another recap stop. Then the culture segment goes fully crowded. Pop Around the Culture runs through Bob Hope, Mary Martin, Bruce Lee, Charo, Danny Bonaduce, Elvis, Buddy Hackett, Ruby Keeler, Mae West, Martha Stewart, Dick Gregory, Phyllis Diller, Eartha Kitt, the Wizard of Oz, and Yoko. It is a lot, and it sounds like the show trying to spend every last reference before the lights come up and the segment cannot protect anybody anymore. Then 1965 lands hard. The finale opens with Lenny Bruce struggling, and the hosts treat it as sad, dark, and sharply different from the goofy lead-in. They also step back for a minute. Before settling into 509, they remember the previous episode's flashback structure with Joel and Midge at Ethan's school, Joel's affair with Penny, and Midge meeting his parents. Kevin calls it lovingly done. Alice stays in the mix of sentiment, jokes, and end-of-run shakiness this companion series has been moving toward. The episode keeps swerving on purpose. Even the cold open jumps from a HeadGum promo to Lenny Bruce, body jokes, British slang, Ted Lasso warmth, and the Maisel Goys title card. That is the whole texture. Kevin and Alice are recapping a finale, but they are also saying goodbye to their own way of watching it together. The ending is loose and affectionate. They tell the listeners they love them and let it go.

As heard by us

A warm farewell recap that keeps the jokes and grief in step.

Kevin and Alice give the Maiselgoys one last ride, and the piece works best when it keeps the recap and the feeling in the same frame. It moves from the finale, Four Minutes, into the show's flashback structure, then into Lenny Bruce's sad, dark endgame, with the pilot and…
