The $700 Million Bank Fraud

May 30, 2019·40 min·3 clips
A former banker describes being drunk on Christmas day while hiding $600 million in trading losses.
The losses were already huge. On Christmas Day, Rosnack was drunk, watching the market move against him, and knowing the damage had climbed beyond $600 million. He could not claw it back. The fraud, as the host frames it, started with bad investments that he did not simply own and leave behind. The hole kept getting wider. The episode stays close to Rosnack's memory of the collapse, from the market panic to the sentence that followed. Prison arrives without much drama. In a holding cell with much younger men, he wonders whether five and a half years will pass behind one small barrier. He feels completely lost. The host asks what the cell was like, and Rosnack answers by comparing dorms, cells, and open-tier spaces. A cell becomes valuable there. Behind a locked door, he says, a person can stop scanning the room every moment for what might happen next. The open spaces feel worse. He moves through seven or eight prisons and learns that danger and deprivation are not always arranged the way outsiders picture them. A library changes the scale. Someone gives him a Bible, and he starts to understand that the punishment is not constant torment. It is exclusion: losing family contact, ordinary privileges, and any easy place in society. The ending stays uncomfortable. Rosnack says he may have been wiser to stay quiet, but if the testimony helps someone, he can live with that.

As heard by us

A prison story about the point where denial stops working.

Extremes frames John Rosnack’s $700 million bank fraud as a confession that opens in the middle of the wreckage: a snowing Christmas dinner, a drunk banker, and losses already too large to unwind.
