#Throwback Episode - w/ Ice Cube | (Ep.64)

February 4, 2026·55 min·4 clips
Ice Cube explains why he refused $75,000 from N.W.A., saying accepting it would mean he was 'a bitch'.
The big question is Friday. A Straight Outta Compton moment sends the room back to where the movie began, and the guest starts fixing the timeline right away. NWA was already behind him, he says. The writing happened around 1994, the shoot followed in 1995, and the movie came out that same year. The room has to sit with that, because the timing feels almost too quick next to Death Certificate and the NWA years. He does not make it sound mystical. He makes it sound like a swing he decided to take. Robert Townsend's Hollywood Shuffle gave him the push, especially the story about credit cards helping get that movie made. In his telling, he and Pooh saw a way in: write it, make it, figure it out. New Line stepping in meant the credit cards did not have to carry the whole thing. Then the conversation slides back into Stanley and the grass, because Drink Champs can turn one tiny Friday detail into a whole room of people laughing at once. That is the clip's charm. It moves from movie origin story to neighborhood memory without changing gears. He says he thought only cool people would get it because it felt too hood and too funny. The punchline is that everybody got it.

As heard by us

Ice Cube turns Friday into a scrappy origin story about timing and hustle.

Ice Cube frames Friday as a scrappy origin story, one that starts with a local idea and ends up bigger than it probably had any right to be. He says he had just left N.W.A. when he and DJ Pooh wrote it in 1994, then shot it in 1995 with New Line behind it.
