Chrissie Hynde: Punk at Ground Zero and the Birth of the Pretenders

March 17, 2026·36 min·2 clips
Chrissie Hynde was a freshman at Kent State when the National Guard opened fire on students.
The heat does the talking. The host puts Chrissie Hynde right beside history before The Pretenders make her impossible to ignore. She is not famous yet. She is watching bands form, cultures crash together, and London change shape while she keeps taking the damage that comes with being nearby. Then it gets ugly. Nick Kent grabs at his belt, pulls it loose, and turns cheap leather with heavy coins into a weapon. The counter cracks loud. Malcolm McLaren drops in panic as the belt catches Hynde and a welt rises fast. Chrissie screams. A customer rushes in, punches Nick Kent in the mouth, and sends a tooth out of his gums. Kent hits the floor cold. Hynde is already running toward World's End, heart pounding, with the old slum ghosts still around her. Morning does not clean it up. McLaren cannot explain the mess, so he makes it a firing, and Westwood agrees. Too much drama. That small, mean verdict leaves Hynde where London first found her: broke, connected, and stranded without a band. Rent vanishes. Friends' desks and floors become beds. Her permit problem makes her status in Europe illegal. The glamour is mostly bruises. What lasts is the part of her that chaos cannot tie down.
