464: AI Grab Bag

November 28, 2023·34 min·3 clips
Marshall describes AI as a dish everyone raves about, but he finds just 'fine,' questioning if it's the future.
Coffee sets the pace. Brian and Marshall open with a late recording caffeine riff, moving from taste to immunity to brain goop before the design talk takes over. Roll call, somehow, is complete. The two hosts keep it casual as hot tub VIP chatter turns into an AI grab bag about work and design tools. The question is simple: does any of this help? One host likes the idea of clicking a button and having a pile of scattered material turned into something mostly usable. The other is less sold. Summaries, email expansion, and prompt expansion can feel ridiculous when the result sounds like office mush. Still, the skepticism has limits. The practical case is that imperfect AI can be good enough if it saves time and a human checks the work after. The computer gets a pat, and the joke works because the disagreement is about tolerance. Nobody is acting like the tools are done. Stage one still feels like stage one. Current AI features come across as basic helpers that could get more useful once they stop pretending to be finished. Then FigJam clicks into place. Figma is the precise pen for pixel work. FigJam is the chunky marker for messy whiteboard thinking, where sorting and synthesis make more sense. That is the design read that sticks. AI feels less awkward when it helps shape the mess instead of making final calls. Brian and Marshall do not crown it. They land somewhere more believable: useful enough to test, annoying enough to doubt, and still something a designer has to review.

As heard by us

A loose but useful AI design conversation, strongest on the gap between FigJam messiness and Figma precision.

AI Grab Bag catches Design Details in a loose, caffeinated mode, with Brian Levin and Marshall Bach circling the parts of AI that feel genuinely useful and the parts that still feel like busywork.
