Commuter Bible · John Ross

Leviticus 25-27, Proverbs 20

March 3, 2026·30 min·3 clips
Leviticus ends by predicting Israel's exile 900 years early if they abandon God's covenant.
Leviticus closes at Sinai. John Ross calls this last section a foreshadowing of Israel's exile, about 900 years before it happens. The command starts with rest. Israel may work the ground for six years, then must let the land keep Sabbath in the seventh year. Jubilee stretches that mercy further. After seven times seven years, debts are canceled and Hebrew servants are released from service. The promise is physical and close to home. Rain comes at the right time, the land gives produce, and one harvest runs into the next without fear or lack. Peace is promised too. Dangerous animals are removed, no sword passes through the land, and Israel can lie down with nothing to fear. The blessing reaches its height in covenant presence. The Lord says he will place his residence among them, walk among them, and be their God. Then the reading turns hard. Rejecting statutes and ordinances brings terror, wasting disease, fever, defeat, and seed planted for enemies to eat. Pride is named and broken. Sky becomes iron, land becomes bronze, and strength is spent with no fruit or harvest. The contrast stays sharp. Obedience is not treated as a feeling, but as the line between freedom and covenant curse. The close points toward Hebrews, where John Ross connects Leviticus to the New Testament and to Jesus as the greater fulfillment.

As heard by us

A steady, restrained reading of Leviticus that carries the covenant warnings into Proverbs 20 and Hebrews.

Commuter Bible closes Leviticus with covenant blessing and covenant curse, then moves into Proverbs 20 and a handoff toward Hebrews. The strongest section is the one on Sabbath years, Jubilee, and exile, where the text's weight does most of the work.
