The search that gripped a nation—where is Daniel Morcombe?

October 9, 2025·9 min
The episode functions as a trailer and first-chapter preview for Where Is Daniel Morcombe, a podcast about one of Australia's most prominent missing child cases. The narrator establishes that a boy went missing from a bus stop in Queensland and that the search that followed was the largest for a missing child in Australian history. Bruce Morcombe narrates the morning of Sunday, December 7, 2003, explaining that he, his wife Denise, and their three sons had planned a family outing to a Christmas business lunch in Brisbane. A delayed fruit-picking arrangement at the neighboring farm meant the boys stayed home while Bruce and Denise went to the lunch. Daniel, one of the Morcombe boys, decided to go to the shops by bus to get a haircut and buy Christmas presents. Around 4pm, Denise returns home from the lunch and learns from their son Bradley that Daniel has gone out. Around 4:15pm, Denise has a sudden, unexplained gut feeling that something is wrong with Daniel. She drives to the bus stop but finds no bus and notices a broken-down bus about a kilometre away. The family waits, then makes phone calls to Daniel's friends and the bus company before beginning to search their property and the surrounding streets in the remaining daylight. Their fear escalates as the search expands. Bruce reports Daniel missing at the Maroochydore police station that evening, but the officer on duty does not appear alarmed and promises a BOLF alert, instructing the family to go home. Police promised to come by that night but never arrived. The family spends the night searching their property by torchlight, calling out Daniel's name. Denise sits on the couch looking out the window all night. Bradley, Daniel's twin brother, cannot sleep and ends up in his parents' bed. Bruce cries — the first time Denise has seen him do so since his father's death nearly 14 years earlier. The following morning the family drives to the police station to file an official missing persons report. Sergeant Laurie Davison arrives and, rather than asking open questions, confronts Bradley with an accusatory finger-pointing and demands to know what happened to his brother. Bradley breaks down crying. Davison then calls the bus company, and the family watches as the color drains from his face.
