Searching For Sarah MacDiarmid - Episode 1

December 27, 2025·1 hr 9 min·5 clips
Sarah's mother on the night her always-punctual daughter never called: that poor soul, whatever happened to her at that station.
Casey opens outside the case. He says Casefile will return in March 2026, and that some Casefile Presents stories are being shared because listeners may have missed them. The framing stays low-key. It does not sell the spinoff so much as place this release among work made with care. Then Sarah comes into focus. She is remembered as loving and kind, close enough to Granny McDermott that the 50-year age gap barely mattered. Friendship carries the episode. Maria Brolley recalls meeting Sarah at high school in about 1980, when shared music taste helped two girls become best friends. Sarah loved music. She joined the Gaelic Choir with Maria, toured to perform, and followed the top 40 charts with real feeling. Wham! and the Eurythmics mattered. At McTavish's Kitchens in Fort William, she liked to dance, especially to the Eurythmics. Her world keeps opening up. After high school, Sarah went to college in Aberdeen to study travel and tourism, while friendships continued through calls and letters. Caroline Lyons enters next. As Sarah's roommate, she remembers nights out, Desperately Seeking Susan, and trying to copy the movie's clothes through an Aberdeen winter. A diary makes the memory precise. Caroline has kept one since childhood, and it lets her find the day she first met Sarah. Then the episode turns. The final stretch moves from warmth to evidence in a car park, where blood is found near concrete curbing and a bush area. Drag marks change the room. Investigators begin to suspect that a lifeless or unconscious body had been dragged near the car.

As heard by us

A restrained missing-person opener that makes Sarah vivid before the evidence turns the story colder.

Searching for Sarah MacDiarmid opens with the disappearance at Cananook railway station on July 11, 1990, but its quiet force comes from the time spent with Sarah before the case file takes over.
