Murder in the Masai Mara | Episode 1, SOS

November 28, 2025·41 min·3 clips
John Ward arrived at the scene in the Masai Mara to find scattered fragments of his daughter's body, recognising her by a genetic toe.
Cara McGugan opens with a warning. She introduces Murder in the Masai Mara as a new series she has worked on, then brings the listener into a distressing story. Bob Ward starts at home. In Suffolk, inside the pale yellow house called Saxonwood, he remembers the Wards as normal, happy, and loving. His mother loved dogs. The family details are plain on purpose, and that makes the later move to Kenya land more quietly. Julie first comes through as family. The narration then takes her to the Masai Mara reserve, where rangers record who travels in and out. Darkness is coming on. Julie and her friend pitch tents at a small campsite before heading out early to look for animals. The jeep does not get far. A little Suzuki breaks down by the road, and Steve Watson stops with a tourist truck to help. He tows them back. At Serena Lodge, Julie finds out a replacement part has to be flown in, while her Australian friend returns to Nairobi. Julie stays. Her flight home is still six days away, and the delay gives her a brief bit of freedom. That evening shifts things. Steve remembers a spark, a sudden liking that grew as he learned more about her. They spend the night together. He hopes she will delay her flight and see him again in Nairobi, but Julie sticks to her plan. The part arrives and mechanics get to work. With four days left before home, Julie and her jeep are ready for the road again.
