After the Revolution: Chapters Eighteen, Nineteen, and Twenty

July 17, 2021·1 hr 20 min·7 clips
Roland bursts into the factory, massacring guards to save Manny from having his brain implanted into a drone.
Sasha no longer feels safe on the street. After Anne's abduction, she answers fear with more duty, the kind of small, practical move people make when safety has already lost the argument. Then the episode tightens around Manny. Dr. Ernst brings him into a carpeted prayer room for battalion members who may soon be dead. There are chairs, Bibles, and a white stone Christ. Manny sits because there is nowhere better to be. He opens a Bible at random and lands on Nebuchadnezzar's golden image, which is not exactly comfort reading. The furnace story drags his religious past back into the room. He remembers enough church and Sunday school to know Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refused the king's order even with fire waiting for them. At first, Manny is irritated more than moved. The cubits, the statue, the whole setup feels ridiculous until it starts matching his own situation too closely. The parallel is nasty, not reassuring. Those men trusted a god to deliver them. Manny is hoping someone who seems godlike might show up. Under pressure, that difference starts to wobble. Fear turns scripture into a field note: bodies, orders, heat, and whatever counts as rescue. The prayer room becomes a holding area with better furniture. Its chairs and worn Bibles sit next to the possibility of martyrdom, so belief feels less like refuge than something filed before violence. Manny keeps reading anyway. The furnace burns hot enough to kill the soldiers carrying out the order, which makes obedience look nearly as deadly as defiance. The scene stays tense, with a dry comic edge. A random Bible passage becomes Manny's grim map for captivity, faith, and the thin hope that someone larger might intervene.

As heard by us

War, prayer, and grim work keep this chapter taut.

Sasha's time in the emergency ward gives the chapter its clearest shape: bandages, antibiotic salves, and food deliveries turn chaos into routine, if only for a while.
